calling a locksmith With our busy lifestyles it’s usually only a matter of time before you get locked out of your home or your car and need a locksmith to come over and help you back in. Many times people calling a locksmith to have specific locks replaced on their doors or just to re key a lock so that someone who has a copy of the older key cannot gain access to a property.

A few simple tips before calling a locksmith can not only insure that you receive the service you are entitled to but will also help the locksmith expedite your service call as well as make sure that they arrived prepared on the location with the specific tools and key blanks that they will need to complete the job to your satisfaction.

Finding a great locksmith and Before calling a locksmith:

1. make sure to have the full address of the location where your require the service (including the zip code). If you are locked out of your car and are on the road try and locate a business in the area that the locksmith can look up on his GPS so that he can reach you faster. Also, make sure the locksmith you are contacting is close in your area, and is a known locksmith.

2. Let the locksmith know any information you have about the type of lock, door, vehicle etc when placing the order (for example if you are calling for an ignition key make sure to have the make, model, year and color of your vehicle handy). If you know what type of locks you have installed on your door make sure to mention that over the phone as well.

3. Make sure to ask the locksmith if the work provided comes with any type of guarantee or warranty.

4. If you do not have the legal permission to access a property or a car you will need to get written consent from the owner before any work can be completed at your location. Most locksmith companies will ask you to send over a consent form from the owner confirming they are allowing you to permit access to their property or their vehicle on their behalf.

Once the locksmith arrives at your location in and asses the job he will most likely be able to give you a set price for the work before he starts working.

If you are happy with the service the locksmith has provided you it is highly recommended to save their number on your cell phone – you never know when you will need to be calling a locksmith service again. Many companies also offer discounts to returning customers.

Ignition keys – what you need to know

With modern technology advancing so fast these days car keys are getting more and more sophisticated as well. Car companies make it a priority to install the most advanced lock systems on their cars so once you get locked out of your vehicle the process of getting you back in is getting more intricate as well. most newer models have advanced technologies installed both in the car as well as on your Ignition Keys that offer very high security and peace of mind to car owners. These security measures usually include transponder chips that allow your car to recognize the key being used to open the car, many times wirelessly even before you put your key inside the switch. While it does make a car thief’s life much harder, it also requires locksmith technicians to stay up to date with the various security systems and measures used to protect vehicles.

Most established locksmith companies employ specific locksmith technicians who are highly trained in Ignition Keys specific field and who are specifically knowledgeable about the various security systems involving car security systems. Furthermore many of today’s newer models have an actual computer installed within the body of the car which communicate to the various parts of the vehicle including the door locks and the ignition switch.

These security measures vary depending on the model, make and year of the vehicle and therefore the price to service your car depends on these variables. When calling for locksmith service for your car make sure to have this information handy so that the locksmith technician knows to prepare the relevant materials and blanks before heading out to your location.

Furthermore, all cars carry a unique Vehicle Identification Number number. Commonly abbreviated to VIN (but sometimes incorrectly referred to as VIN number), is a unique serial number used by the automotive industry to identify individual vehicles. Prior to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats. However since 1981, these codes consist of 17 characters which do not include the letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0). Your car’s VIN number is listed on the registration document of your vehicle and will be required by the locksmith technician to produce a new ignition key for your specific car.

Newer cars have transponder chips installed in the body of your key. These transponder chips communicate with your vehicle and provide an added measure of security. Older style mechanical metal car keys are rapidly being replaced by “smart keys” that are usually laser cut and are far more sophisticated (and therefore more costly to replicate) then the old type locks. Some cars, like the Toyota Prius, have an entirely electronic key (called a fob) that controls both doors as well as the ignition switch.

Costs: The Boston Globe quoted a survey that was conducted back in 2007 listing the minimum cost to replace a smart key at $150 – far more then the cost of producing an old-style metal key. That cost can be as high as $350 and up, depending on the model, make and year of your specific car. When you must get a replacement key from a dealer, you may have to wait several days as well as paying more. The Ignition Keys exact cost depends partly on the make of the car. For example, a replacement key for a Prius averages $300.

Some car companies (especially the higher end car makers) require you to contact their dealership directly for additional keys. Generally speaking it is cheaper to get a locksmith to make those type of keys for you as dealerships are known to charge higher fees for keys as well as take at least a few days to produce a new key for you. In the past car makers used to make it intentionally hard for clients to receive the codes required to make keys for the vehicles so that they can monopolize that business as well. In 2008, California became the first state to require automobile companies to make their codes available to clients and locksmiths. Consumer groups like the American Automobile Association are working to make this a national standard so that car owners have the freedom to make keys for their vehicles independently.

It’s highly recommended to have a backup key made in case you lose a key or accidentally lock your keys in your car. You can also have a simple metal copy of a smart key made and it will usually work in the door lock, just not in the ignition. However, consider investing in a backup smart key. It will save you time ad money rather than not having the use of your car for several days while you wait for a replacement as well as any emergency service costs that may be charged to the Ignition Keys service provided to you by a locksmith company.

Rekeying vs. Lock Change whats the difference?

There are many reasons you may want to change the locks on your door or re key the lock – which one do you choose ? Rekeying usually refers to the ability to change a lock “from the inside” so that a different key may operate it and the former key will no longer work. Rekeying is done when an individual may be concerned that unauthorized persons have keys to the lock and can gain access to a property. The lock may be altered by a locksmith so that only the new keys will work. Rekeying may be done without replacement of the entire lock and are therefore usually a cheaper method then purchasing and installing a new lock to replace the old one.

In case you move into a new home, rent a new apartment, lease new commercial space, fire an employee, change cleaning companies or for any other reason you may find yourself thinking about changing your locks or Rekeying them. Even if you do get your keys back from previous owners, occupants, employees or contractors, they may have had the opportunity to make copies of the keys. You have no way of knowing how many duplicates may have been made, or by who. In many cases where you think a lock needs to be changed, you may also have the option of Rekeying the lock at a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the time it would take to purchase new locks and installing them. Many home and business owners also use the Rekeying process in order to have one master key that will work on multiple locks in an establishment, home, apartment or business.

Rekeying a lock is usually a cheaper way to go if the lock that you currently have installed is in good working condition. Furthermore the process of Rekeying a lock is much faster then installing a new one. A locksmith will be able to re key the lock for you and provide you with new keys, as the old ones will not work any longer once the re key work is completed. It is important to note that some locks have higher security mechanism which may make the lock harder to re key. In some cases, it may not even be possible to re key a lock if it’s a lock that has a higher security level but any professional locksmith will be able to let you know if that is the case once they see the type of lock you have installed. In that case your best bet would be to purchase a new lock and have it professionally installed by a locksmith. Many locksmith companies can provide you with new locks as well as install them for you. In most cases if you end up purchasing a new lock from a locksmith company they will install it for you for a cheaper rate then they will charge for installing a lock which you have independently purchased separately.

If you end up needing to replace your lock be sure to research various brands and type of locks. These days there’s a very wide variety of locks available to consumers with various security levels and mechanisms. Just be sure to always keep an extra set of keys at a secured location in case of emergencies.

While it is possible to re key a key yourself, it is not recommended as you may end up damaging the lock and therefore making it impossible to re key by a professional locksmith. Always consult a professional locksmith before attempting to re key a lock yourself.

Well there a many different factors that can determine the amount of time and the method of entry the technician will utilize in order to unlatch a lock for a customer. The most important detail that will determine how difficult a lock is to gain access to it is security level. The security level of a lock relies on the brand and model of the lock, with different models comprising unique types of metals and locking mechanisms. This will determine the method of entry the technician can utilize in order to gain access to the lock.

Once the technician arrives, they can determine the difficulty of the procedure and what method it will requisite. The locksmith can open a lock by jimmying it with a wire. Other locks will call for what is called a locksmith pump. Its function involves inserting a flaccid tube into the lock and pumping it until the volume forces the latching mechanism to unhinge. This approach is usually slightly costlier and more time consuming. Regardless of the pricing and different practices used to gain access to a lock, the technician should be able to arrive promptly and present the client with a reasonable price before they begin their work.

If your office is right around the corner from me, how come there’s an estimated half an hour waiting period for your arrival to get me into my house?

Well if you’re locked out of your car, you’re calling us because we’re a mobile service. The way our technicians operate is out of the regional field of coverage, not at our office base. What this means is that our locksmiths are out and about in the general area providing service for customers. That explains why our estimated arrival time isn’t 5 minutes!

However, we make sure to have a multitude of locksmiths providing service in every area we cover. This guarantees that a lockout specialist is nearby you, regardless of where you are and when you call. This is why we can ensure that our estimated arrival time should be no more than 30 to 40 minutes. If our locksmiths were waiting in the office to be dispatched, we’d only be right next to clients that are located nearby. This way, we can offer everyone an equal, reasonable, prompt arrival time!

If a client needs work done on their locks but is not available on the property a mobile locksmith WILL be able to provide it. However, there are some legal matters that must be addressed in such a scenario. It is against the law to operate on some ones property without official verification of their consent. If a client is not on sight, they can easily dispute the charges and have them voided. If further legal action is pursued, the customer can even sue the locksmith.

This is why it is crucial for the mobile company to fax or email the customer what is called a work release form. A work release form stipulates that the customer is according the locksmith with legally binding authorization to do work on their property. This is the case whether servicing residential or commercial properties. Once the customer receives the consent form, they must fill out the personal information that the form entails. This includes the address of the job site, the address of the customer’s residency, the date that the form was filed, and the customer’s signature. The customer must also photocopy a picture id of themselves that contains proof address and date of birth, such as a driver’s license. As soon as the mobile company receives the filled out form, they’ll be able to send a technician out to you to render whatever service you require, from getting you into your home, to changing your car ignition, to changing the lock on your door.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you want to pay by credit card over the phone, the company will need to fax/email you what is called a credit card consent form as well. A credit card consent form is similar to a work release form in that it legally demonstrates that the customer has given the locksmith authorization; except exclusively to run their credit card. Once again, without the verification of the form, the customer can dispute charges and have them voided very easily.

Credit card consent forms come in handy not only when a customer wants to pay for themselves by credit card and they’re not on site- but also if they need to charge their credit card over the phone to pay for someone else’s service. For example, Kimberly was locked out of her car, with no cash or credit card available. She needed to contact her mother to pay for a locksmith to get her back into the vehicle. Before the locksmith can even head out to assist her, his office base must receive the consent form in order to make sure that they can charge her credit card once the service is complete. Even though Kimberly is the card holder’s daughter, it is imperative that the company has concrete evidence that they were authorized to charge the card for the person on site to have the service provided. Of course, the technician will give you the price before they begin working and BEFORE they have the office run the credit card. You can rest assured that you will not incur any hidden fees or charges that you were not informed of previously. The company is legally required to dictate the exact final fee for all the services provided before they are entitled to charge your card- so don’t worry- there won’t be any surprises waiting for you on your bill!!!

Well the most convenient option for you is to call a professional mobile locksmith. When a locksmith comes to your home of place of business to reconfigure a set of keys, they can go about it in two ways. The more commonly known method of switching keys is changing the lock. This is usually more useful when the customer’s original lock is worn out from wear and tear or frozen. However, if an individual wants to change the keys for a lock without actually changing the lock, they can opt for a service know as “rekeying”

Rekeying involves rearranging the pins inside a lock’s latching mechanism. What this allows the technician to do is to synchronize the same key mold to unlock multiple locks. This means that you can share keys with roommates or loved ones. Also you can configure I set of keys to 1 group of locks, and another set to another.

Rekeys are also ideal when you want to change your keys without the hassle of changing your locks, especially if there’s a high volume. For example, let’s say a landlord wants to switch out the keys for his entire building- a rather costly and cumbersome feat if the locksmith were to try to change out all the locks! So instead of having to spend a whole bunch of money on new locks that he really doesn’t need… he can elect to just have the keys reconfigured, which is all he really needs in the first place.
If a lock is damaged to the point that it is no longer functioning, can I use it if I have it rekeyed by a mobile locksmith?

Sometimes, after years of use and wear and tear, a lock may begin to freeze, jam, and eventually actually break, rendering it unusable. Once this occurs, it is usually very difficult and at times not even possible to repair the lock. The most likely course of action to be effective is to simply remove and replace the damaged lock. Rekeying the lock will have no beneficial effect on the attrition that the lock has undergone. Once a lock is changed, however, the lock that the technician reinstalls can be rekeyed to be accessible through a key or keyset that the customer already owns. This way you can have the lock you originally wanted rekeyed rekeyed- and have it changed at the same time!

I know that mobile locksmiths can make me a new ignition key- but I’m on a tight budget. What type of factors would determine the pricing of making me an ignition key?

Well, an ignition key, in its most basic form, is still a key that opens a lock- which is the ignition slot. What will determine the cost of a mobile locksmith making a customer a new key is the complexity, time expenditure, and manufacturing cost of the key itself. Once the technician arrives, they can determine the specific course of action they will need to take to forge that key. This is not only based on the year and model of the vehicle and type of key, but also the condition of the ignition itself due to accumulation of wearing.

Certain ignition keys contain what is referred to as a transponder chip, which is a computer chip that is programmed to activate the ignition for solely that particular vehicle. This is to ensure that an individual with a similar key or a pick can’t jimmy the ignition on and steal your car. Transponder keys tend to be much more difficult to make, and they require specialists that are equipped to reprogram them. It is much more time consuming to make transponder keys, and often requires tiny parts that cost more to order. It is for this reason that ignition keys with transponder keys in them often end up costing the technician themselves, as well as the customer, more to make.

Another factor that will determine the cost of making an ignition key is whether or not it also opens the car doors, and if not, whether or not the customer requires door keys made for the car as well. The more material the technician needs to use, the more it will cost him. Also, it requires a substantially greater deal of labor and time to mold two keys as opposed to one. To further compound the expense of such a service, the ignition key of vehicles with separate keys from the doors typically do house a transponder chip. This is because the door key/ ignition key ensemble are typically components of what is called a VAT system. VAT stands for vehicular anti-theft (system). VAT systems are designed to ensure maximum security and are more complicated to steal because their original keys are specifically engineered to match the cylinders of that particular car only. For this reason, the keys are also much more difficult to replace once lost.

The final factor that would increase the overall cost of an ignition replacement job is what actually needs to be replaced. From time to time, it’s not the key that’s not functioning properly- it is the ignition itself. Due to high mileage and on road agitation of the ignition and engine, an automobile can accrue a large amount of internal damage. It is much more expensive and difficult to change out the entire ignition of a car than to simply mold a new key. But regardless of the time of day, you can rely on 24 hour mobile locksmith services like BestBuyLock and they can help you with your ignition trouble.
